Dear Governor Davis and Director Hight,

I am writing to urge you to recommend that the California Fish and Game Commission adopt the preferred alternative for a network of reserves put forward by your Fish and Game Department and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.

I prefer a more comprehensive network of reserves than the Department's preferred alternative, but I believe this compromise will provide the minimum protection necessary for Channel Islands marine life while accommodating existing public and commercial uses of these waters. Selection of a lesser alternative would not achieve the consensus-based goals of the Marine Reserves Working Group and would threaten the success of the reserve network itself.

The three-year Channel Islands marine reserves designation process has been exhaustive, involving state and federal partners as well as citizen stakeholders like myself. At a cost of over $1 million dollars, the process was supported by professional facilitators and highly respected scientific and socioeconomic advisory panels. Over 30 marine reserve network options were extensively analyzed, generating an unprecedented level of ecological and socioeconomic information. The process included extensive outreach to affected stakeholders and the public through public forums, the solicitation of written comments, and facilitated dialogue among smaller groups. With such a thorough process supporting the conclusions, there is no justification for delay at this point.

I, and other California voters, want and deserve to see the extraordinary biodiversity of marine life and ocean habitat around these islands protected. I urge you to demonstrate your leadership on environmental issues by strongly supporting the preferred alternative for a network of marine reserves at the Channel Islands.

Sincerely Yours,
